Emory University

Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing

While at TCU, I decided that I wanted to pursue a nursing degree. Although I enjoyed working in public relations, I did not find much fulfillment in the profession.

I started taking prerequisite courses like Anatomy and Physiology at TCU, and I finally felt like I found my calling.

Attracted to Emory's social responsibility initiatives in the nursing school, I applied senior year, was accepted, and deferred my acceptance until after my Fulbright grant year.

I am currently in my final semester of nursing school, and, although the pace and rigor of the program are challenging, I have no doubt that I am in the right profession.

I am excited to integrate all of my skills and past experiences with public relations and education into my nursing career.

BSN Graduation

I was selected from the top 10 percent academically of my nursing cohort to integrate my passion for fighting human trafficking into Emory Healthcare. After COVID-19 hit, I could no longer carry out that project.

Instead, I conducted qualitative interviews of nursing leaders in the community about key leadership qualities required of the COVID-19 crisis response. Learn more about this leadership-focused program below.

Community Health

During my time in my population health clinical, I had the opportunity to work at the Gateway Center, a non-profit in the metro Atlanta area that provides holistic care and rehabilitation for men who struggle with chronic homelessness.

I used my previous experience as a high school teacher to prepare and teach a weekly curriculum about diet, exercise, smoking cessation, and stress management.

Policy and Advocacy in Nursing

Advocacy is an integral part of nursing practice. In this course, we learned more about the creation and adoption of legislation at the local, state, and national levels. Nurses are the most trusted profession, and it is up to us to advocate for our patients both in and out of the hospital.

Using my experience advocating on Capitol Hill with IJM for anti-trafficking legislation, I researched and drafted an elevator pitch for an active piece of legislation.

I hope to use these skills in my future nursing practice.

Maternal Newborn and Mental Health

Georgia is the number one state in maternal mortality in the United States. Because of this alarming statistic, our curriculum focuses heavily on the prevention, management, and treatment for common postpartum complications.

While I was in maternal newborn, I was also learning about mental health. Mental health is an essential pillar of well-being, and it plays an integral role in maternity with postpartum depression.

I combined the two subjects to discuss postpartum psychosis in this clinical practice paper.
